W3U Customer Support

Unix Database - MySQL/PHP

The main database available on our Unix servers is mySQL.  It can be accessed via PHP (probably the most widely used method) or via the mySQL prompt via telnet.

Note: W3U offers mySQL database as a service to our Platinum customers. We do not provide tech support for databases; however, you can find excellent tutorials for mySQL at www.mysql.com and for PHP at www.phpbuilder.com ( or www.phpbuilder.com/getit ).

Note: The only type of database that W3U permits on our system is mySQL; other database types make heavy use of system resources. Allowing them would negatively impact the performance of other clients' websites.

Note:  We create your database for you when you sign up for the Platinum web hosting account. If you need to upgrade to a Platinum account give us a call at 619 444 9186.  There is a $25 fee to upgrade to mySQL/PHP.

The name of your database will be the prefix of your domain name.  For example, if your domain name is xyz.com, then your database name will be 'xyz'.  To access mySQL via the telnet prompt, type 'mySQL' (and hit enter), then type your domainnameprefix (and hit enter).  You be there.
